Dear Vintage Film Aficionado:

America's classic films are being forgotten as time and neglect dissolve these celluloid works of art. Those which survive are buried in film vaults, unappreciated and unseen. Only the most popular movies are still viewed, a small fraction of the rich tapestry created in Hollywood's heyday. These films chronicle a significant slice of American history ranging from the Speakeasies of the 20s to the radical changes wrought by the Me Generation of the 60s.

As a NEVFS supporter, you can help make these masterpieces available to the viewing public once again. In fact, NEVFS has identified several of Spencer Tracy's initial films, made for Fox Studios in the early 30s, which have been preserved, but have yet to be copied and distributed. These films provide a window on Depression-era America undistorted by the filter of intervening years.

In Young America, The Mad Game and Shanghai Madness, Tracy offers us a preview of his budding talents as an actor, heralding his academy-award-winning performances as Manuel in Captains Courageous and Father Flanagan in Boys Town. While these movies differ widely from each other, they all share a common theme: achieving redemption despite overwhelming odds, something that Tracy struggled with on a personal level for much of his life.
