Spencer Tracy's "Young America" (1932)

Young America

Synopsis

Two troublesome youths, Arthur (Conlon) and Nutty (Borzage), are placed in the care of Arthur’s aunt, Mrs. Taylor (Padden). While the boys are spending a night with Nutty’s grandmother (Mercer), she becomes seriously ill and they rush to the drugstore to get her needed medicine. When they can find no one to help them, they break into the drugstore and steal the medicine. They are caught and each lies to try to save the other. Nutty’s grandmother subsequently clears up the story, but Arthur’s aunt refuses to have anything more to do with them. Mrs. Doray, the druggist’s wife (Kenyon), requests custody of the boys, although her husband (Tracy) does not agree. Later on, Nutty becomes seriously ill and Arthur steals some money in a futile attempt to save Nutty’s life. Despondent about Nutty’s death, Arthur returns to Doray’s drugstore where he walks in on a hold-up. He is taken hostage by the thieves, but he struggles with them in the getaway car, leading to their capture. As a result of Arthur’s actions, Doray is won over and decides that he and his wife will adopt Arthur.

“…the ever dependable Mr. Tracy is convincing as Doray.”  New York Times, May 7, 1932.

“Mr. Tracy handles the role of Doray admirably…” New York Times, May 15, 1932.

Dear Vintage Film Aficionado:

The following is a proposal for the transfer of a 1932, 17 minute clip of 35mm film "YOUNG AMERICA" with SPENCER TRACY. VTA proposes to clean and transfer the film to DVD for audience viewing. The film is in mint condition with no splices or scratches, has all the intro titles and the fade in and fade out to black.

Film Transfer (1 hour) $550.00
DVD output $48.00
Total Services Proposal $598.00

To view a copy of this proposal in its entirety please click here

We can really use your help to make this a reality.

Why should Young America only be available to researchers, students or scholars with access to UCLA?

This is why the NEVFS wants to preserve, restore and make publicly available on DVD this one reel of Young America.

Can You Help?

The nonprofit New England Vintage Film Society, Inc. is of course in need of money. Donations in any amount are greatly appreciated. We have recently applied for 501c3 tax exempt status and are expecting to receive approval soon.
